Thank you to the many, many who joined us at the Bronx Zoo on October 2nd for our annual benefit. Over 200 people celebrated the rebirth of the river with honorees Maria Hinojosa and Kim Mathews. Live Latin Jazz and Salsa by Chico Alvarez & Rumbayson kept the dance floor busy. Each image that was projected on large screens and each speaker contributed to the sense that something tremendous is underway on the Bronx River.

Honorees at the 2012 Upstream Soiree:

Maria Hinojosa, anchor and executive producer of the NPR program Latino USA.

For 25 years, Maria Hinojosa has helped tell America's untold stories and brought to light unsung heroes in America and abroad. In April 2010, Maria launched The Futuro Media Group with the mission to produce multi-platform, community-based journalism that respects and celebrates the cultural richness of the American Experience.

Maria Hinojosa is a long time and ardent supporter of urban nature as demonstrated by her Radio Nature series on Latino USA dedicating a piece about canoeing on the Bronx River.

Kim Mathews is a founding principal of Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects, P.C. Kim became a landscape architect because it is an art whose canvas is people - - the people she brings together to renew a space and the people who come to use and enjoy it.

Kim's keen interest in cultural and historic landscapes has complimented the work of the Bronx River Alliance. In 2004, she crafted design and management guidelines for the Bronx River Greenway and more recently directed the award winning Master Plan for Shoelace Park on the Bronx River Greenway.
