Bronx River Art Center Celbrats the end of " Winter Blues Buster "
1087 East Tremont Avenue / 4th Floor Studio
Adult Art Classes with a
"Kiln Opening" Reception
Bronx, NY............ A couple of months ago, when the harsh winter of 2009 was beginning to set in, Bronx River Art Center's Executive Director, Gail Nathan, had a great idea - "We need a "Winter Blues Buster" for the adults of our community, to help them escape from the harsh realities of these stressful times". So she designed a sequence of art classes that would be a sampling of different art media, one leading into the other, based on direct observation of our local natural environment. And what better place to see nature in the Bronx than the world class New York Botanical Gardens. So on the coldest day of the year, Saturday morning, January 17th, with the temperature barely above single digits, 12 registered adults made off for the FREE entree time at the New York Botanical Gardens to take pictures of snow covered landscape in the crisp winter light under the direction of award winning photographer Marisol Diaz.
"It was SOOOO cold, remembers, Madhulika Atluri, but we really were inspired by our teacher and BRAC's Director, Gail Nathan" (herself an artist in her own right). "In a few short lessons they taught us how to see through the camera composition and space in a way that I never though of when taking pictures before" expressed Magda Amaya. Upon returning to the Art Center that afternoon the students were greeted with hot, spiced apple cider to warm their bodies and sprits. "With the graciousness of this activity we knew we were going to have a great series of class from this special art place in the middle of the Bronx, an uncut jewel of a community resource", said Diane Farrell.
The series continued over seven weeks in which the students manipulated their original photographs into representational or abstract interpretations of the original landscape subject matter, trying printmaking techniques (under the direction of BRAC Printmaking instructor Luanda Lozano, watercolor painting taught by Gail Nathan, and finally ceramics taught by Master Ceramicist, Rubin King. The works produced represent some of the most elegant images of the Bronx's best assets, its natural landscape, and are accomplished artworks from a diverse group of Bronx residents.
This Saturday, the final fruits of the series of 7 classes will be coming out of the Kiln, a set of uniquely individual ceramic relief tiles created by each of the 12 students and it promises to be like Christmas morning again - opening up presents with joyful surprise, on what is predicted to be the first spring-like day of the year.
